Chaffee Citizens for Sustainability (CCFS) announced that its first fundraiser is scheduled on Saturday, April 4, from 5:00-9:00 p.m., at the Victoria Tavern in downtown Salida.

At the event CCFS will provide educational information regarding Nestle’s proposed water project and informed citizens will be available to answer questions. The Lazy Aliens, a popular local band, will play from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., and there will be complimentary pizza. Suggested donation at the door is $8.

CCFS, a group of concerned local citizens, aims to study Arkansas Valley sustainability issues, educate residents, and work to steer county and local governments toward sustainable, environmentally friendly, smart growth. Nestle Water North America’s permit application to harvest spring water from Chaffee County for bottling in Denver is the group’s first project.

Money raised from the Saturday event at the Vic will be used to address and oppose the Nestle project including public relations services and educational materials. If you cannot attend, contributions can be sent to CCFS, P.O. Box 426, Salida, 81201. CCFS welcomes all citizens to join the group. For more information or to get involved, come to the group’s next meeting on Sunday, April 5 at 4:00 p.m., downstairs at Bongo Billy’s, or email CCFSustainability@gmail.com.

Hellbound Billy’s eclectic mix of blues, swing, punk, and rock and roll goes far beyond the rockabilly genre suggested by their name. Dave Garlow’s vocals are strong and melodic, and the guitar work hearkens to a simpler time. The music is never overdone, just American musicians drawing upon the wide range of styles that America has produced. In an age when music is ever more commercially bland and homogeneous, Hellbound Billy is moving beyond traditional genres and making music that is fun to listen to and even more enjoying to see performed.

A glimpse into the future of funk juxtaposed with timeless spirit of music. You can here a little bit of their funk at www.littlehercules.net

Little Hercules are crusaders on the frontiers of rock. After spending time with New Orleans funk pioneers, the Meters, Papa Grows Funk, Wild Magnolias, Rebirth Brass Band, PBS, Zigaboo Modeliste, Boneramma with Fred Wesley, it seems inevitable that some real deal funk has rubbed off on Little Hercules.

Byron Shaw Projex July 6th and 7th

Feed Your Soul (EmbryonicRecords)

As the leader of The Jonez and Judge Roughneck, Byron Shaw has been a headliner on the Denver music scene for longer than some of its younger members have been alive — but that doesn’t mean he’s stopped evolving as an artist.

No punk-funk or third-generation ska retreads here. Instead, instrumentalists like keyboard specialist Chad Aman, clavinetist Geoff Cleveland and trombonist Gary Mallory create gently jazzy, casually engaging rhythms and melodies.

Shaw joins in with bongos and laid-back singing that entwines with the sinuous warbling of Melinda Dickson and Elizabeth Rose, who was once with (another flashback) Sympathy F. As a result, tracks such as “Happy Feelings” and “I Can Relate” exude an evocative, end-of-the-evening vibe that’s mellow without seeming tired.

Shaw’s brand-new groove may catch longtime fans off guard, but as Feed Your Soul demonstrates, change is good.

The boys of 40 Gallon Still Bluegrass Band have been picking together since the late 90’s when they began attending area bluegrass festivals together. Playing high energy traditional and original tunes in the bluegrass and old time style, 40 Gallon Still has been making a name for themselves in Colorado’s front range bluegrass scene.

Jeff Mosgrove - Lead vocal & guitar. Plays a 2006 Martin D28.

Scott Kofoed - Plays a Gibson Mastertone Scruggs Style banjer.

Mike Martin - Plays an ancient fiddle of unkown origin.

Davis Vardaman - Plays a ’90’s Flatiron mandolin and a ‘98 Martin, harmony & lead vocals.

Eric Drobny - Upright bass & harmony vocals.

The group blends two and three part harmonies with the traditional sound of guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and upright bass. Influenced by such artists as Old Crow Medicine Show, Bill Monroe, Larry Keel, Tony Rice, and John Hartford, the boys have a vast knowledge of past and present like-minded musicians.

For a good down-home, mountain music jam, come out and experience 40 Gallon Still.

The band usually starts about 9:30 PM and the there is a $3.00 cover charge.
